Some call Meath the 'Heart of Irish Civilisation'. An area of rich limestone
plain, Meath countryside surrounds the Boyne, a river which represents a
touchstone in the history of Ireland. The Boyne Valley has borne witness to
almost every stage of Irish history from prehistoric times to the Battle of the
Boyne in 1690 when King William III defeated the exiled King James II for the
crown of England.
Meath, once referred to as the Royal County because it was ruled by the kings of
pagan Ireland and early Christian Ireland, is now better known for the Book of
Kells. This hand-illustrated Latin manuscript of the four gospels was
meticulously produced here in the ninth century and is on display in Trinity
College Dublin. Other attractions include Butterstream Gardens, Trim; Grove
Gardens, Kells; Loughcrew Historic Gardens, Oldcastle; and Mountainstown House
at Castletown in Navan.
